The impregnable fortress
The Amazonas region was the birthplace of one of Peru's most significant pre-Hispanic cultures: the Chachapoyas. It was here that these ancient inhabitants constructed Kuelap, an imposing stone structure protected by an outer wall rising to 20 meters in height. Perched atop a mountain, it sits within a rugged and dramatic landscape. Until recently, the only ways to reach this archaeological site were by land—either by car or on foot.
Today, the fortress can be reached in just 20 minutes thanks to a modern cable car system departing from Nuevo Tingo. However, for adventure seekers, the traditional hike remains an irresistible challenge.
What to see in Kuelap beyond its walls?
Kuelap is both a military fortress and an incredibly complex city. Beyond its imposing outer wall—standing up to 20 meters high—the site houses more than 500 stone structures, including dwellings, plazas, and ceremonial spaces. As you venture into this ancient sanctuary, you can discover how the Chachapoyas organized their homes, with designs focused on functionality and harmony with the natural environment.
One of the most fascinating landmarks is the Templo Mayor (Great Temple), also known as Tintero (Inkwell). This circular structure, shaped like an inverted cone, is linked to astronomical beliefs, reflecting the sophisticated knowledge of Kuelap’s inhabitants. The site is filled with architectural details that tell the story of an advanced society that built a fortress for defense—a place where daily life and spirituality were deeply intertwined.
Every corner of Kuelap invites exploration, from the open plazas where social and ceremonial activities took place to the scattered dwellings that reveal how the community was organized. The fortress stands as a testament to the grandeur and complexity of the Chachapoya civilization and remains one of the most important archaeological sites in Peru.

Nuevo Tingo to the Tourist Station (La Malca):
