There are exhibitions that take us on a real journey into the past, back to a period that marked history forever. The “Lord of Sipán, mystery and splendor in the north of Peru” exhibition, is undoubtedly one of these cases. Modern and minimalist, but very complete, this exhibition allows us to understand the importance of the discovery of this ancient Mochica ruler who ruled the north of Peru in the 3rd-century, as well as its worldwide impact and significance in Latin American archeology and history.

The Mochica Culture

To understand the magnitude of the Lord of Sipán discovery it is essential to go back to its origin, the Mochica ideology and beliefs, the territory in which they developed and the main monuments with Mochica evidence found to date, as well as the funerary patterns that changed according to the social hierarchy.

The exhibition allows visitors to discover the Sipán archaeological monument today and how it would have looked 1700 years ago.

The Lord of Sipán and his treasures

The above exhibition also reveals the wonders of this historic discovery. During the discovery of the Lord of Sipán, the first layer appeared after removing the sediments from inside the coffin: a mass of copper objects covered with rust; some gold ornaments and disintegrated textiles that formed a wrapping to protect the remains of the Lord of Sipán. The countless treasures that accompanied the Lord of Sipán included earrings, nose rings, medals, breastplates, bracelets and necklaces that show the rank of this ancient ruler of northern Peru.

It should be noted that the enigmatic Lord of Sipán was accompanied on his journey to the eternal kingdom by other important figures, including the Priest, called this because a cup was found in his right hand and a diadem with the “owl” deity (god of priests).

The bones of a ruler known as the Old Lord of Sipán, who preceded the Lord of Sipán, were also found in the Sipán archaeological monument. As well as other members of the Mochica nobility, arranged according to their power and rank.
