The Chachapoyas culture was one of Peru's superior cultures, having as their center the very extensive territory of the valley of Utcubamba. They were among the pioneers of the system of sowing on terraces or platforms to develop appropriate agricultural activities. They also stood out for their architecture and funeral practice to say goodbye to their loved ones.
Arrival in the city of Jaén, transfer from the airport to the city of Chachapoyas with the "Chachapoyas Premium Service" special service. Overnight stay in Chachapoyas.
In the morning we will start our tour on foot from Plaza Burgos through one of the main streets of the city to the Plaza de Armas de Chachapoyas, where we will take a look at colonial mansions with traditional balconies, the Municipal Palace and Chachapoyas Cathedral. We will then go by bus to the Mirador de Luya Urco for a panoramic view of the city. We will continue by bus to the town of Huancas, a community known for its women potters. On the way we will visit the Mirador del Cañón de Huanca Urco where we can use binoculars to see the first fall of the Gocta Waterfall and the Pueblo de los Muertos; followed by the Mirador del Cañón del Sonche from where we will observe the varied and wild geography of the Amazonian Andes. We will end our tour in a craft house for a demonstration of the pottery process, where we can participate and create our own ceramics. Return to Chachapoyas.
After breakfast we will move on to the town of San Bartolo, from where we will go on horseback or on foot to the Revash Mausoleums, tombs built into the enormous skirts of the rocks, painted in red and cream and resembling small houses. Some are up to three stories high and others have gable roofs with T-shaped, cross and square windows. The mausoleums can be observed from a distance of approximately 330 feet, this being the most strategic point from which to view the funerary complex in its entirety. After the visit we will have lunch. Next, we will visit the Museo del Centro Mallqui, or Leymebamba Museum, whose design recreates local architectural traditions. The rich and varied flora beautifies the gardens that surround it, highlighting an orchid collection of more than 100 local varieties. This museum houses a valuable collection of 240 mummies found in La Laguna de los Cóndores. Return to Chachapoyas.
In the morning we will go to Kuélap, a majestic architectural work of the Chachapoyas. On our way, we will stop for a panoramic view of the Macro Archaeological Complex, known as "Torres de Macro" ("Macro Towers") for its construction features, which is located on the slope of a hill facing the Utcubamba River. From there we will head on to Nuevo Tingo to board the bus that will take us to the Cable Car departure station. We will board the modern cable cars that will take us on a short and safe journey to the starting point of Kuélap. We will ascend by foot or on horseback to the so-called "Fortress" which is built on the top of Cerro Barreta (at 9,840 feet above sea level). This archaeological site is surrounded by beautiful landscapes and, at first glance, it seems an impenetrable place, since it is flanked by colossal walls and cliffs on three of its four sides. It contains three platforms whose interior is made up of circular buildings decorated with rhombus and zigzag friezes. Its complex interior architecture evidences its function as a well-organized population group. Together with the landscape that surrounds it, the natural spectacle that this place has to offer is simply unforgettable. On our way back we will stop at Nuevo Tingo for lunch. Return to Chachapoyas.
